A Very Potter Wedding
Updated: Mar 3
Working with Emily & Blake was a magical experience, and not just because their wedding was Harry Potter themed (but a little bit because of that). The level of organization, detail, and care the couple put into planning their wedding made my job as their planner a breeze!
Emily & Blake's wedding was full of nods to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, from boutonnières with each groomsman's Hogwarts house crest affixed, to golden Lindor chocolate truffles with wings to dress them like golden snitches, to hosting the ceremony at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in SE Minneapolis, a building whose architecture shares many features with the Hogwarts Castle.
A Broom Flight Through the Day
The day started bright and early for Emily and her bridesmaids, as they gathered at her hotel for hair and makeup with Teanna, Shaina, and Ashley from Onsite Muse. The ladies spent about three hours getting ready together before being transported to the ceremony site in a shuttle by Northfield Lines.
The couple provided catering from Chipotle for the full wedding party to enjoy before the ceremony. It was like having a mobile Chipotle in the church basement, which was pretty awesome.
The groomsmen wore three piece gray suits with a white shirt and navy tie by Men's Wearhouse and adorable navy blue feather boutonnières by KirahleyKreations. The groom opted for a two piece suit with a striped red tie, a white feathered boutonnière, and had a tiny golden snitch embellishment on his right lapel.
The bridesmaids wore matching long flowy navy dresses by Azazie. The bride wore a gorgeous ivory dress with rhinestone embellishments on the front and shoulder straps from Bride to Be (no longer in business). All had beautiful bouquets with mixtures of white and muted pink sola wood and silk flowers by Pine & Petal Weddings.
The ceremony, a full mass led by Father Paul Shovelain, included beautiful melodies sung by a church cantor accompanied by an organ that filled every corner of the sanctuary.
While there was some rain just before and during the ceremony, it cleared up just in time to grab some perfectly lit photo and video of the wedding party outside before they were whisked away to the reception in a stretch Escalade limousine, provided by 1st Class Transportation.
While the wedding party was busy taking photos, wedding guests trickled into the reception hall at the DoubleTree by Hilton Roseville Minneapolis, where they were greeted with a full open bar, gorgeous decor that had been set up by Kim of It's The Little Things Events while we were all at the ceremony, the Georgia Bulldogs game playing in the hotel lobby (the bride and her family are HUGE fans), and magician Tom Anderson, who was performing roaming magic for the guests.
But the magician wasn't the only source of magic! Here's where the Harry Potter theme really came into play. A guestbook was Tom Riddle's diary, which could be signed by either a feather or a wand. Escort cards were attached to keys with wings, which doubled as bottle openers for the guests to keep. The gift table included an owl cage for cards. Tables were sprinkled with paper hearts made from the pages of Harry Potter books. And my favorite part? A Honeyduke's candy display with golden snitch truffles, Bertie Bott's every flavor beans, and more!
Upon their arrival, after catching five or so minutes of the Bulldog's game, the wedding party entered in a parade of wands, under which the couple made their entrance for the first time as Mr. and Mrs. Frels.
The reception was tons of fun for everyone. All night, people were approaching me to say what a good time they were having and how beautifully everything turned out! Simply put, it was magical.
To the Bride and Groom
Emily and Blake, you are two of the kindest, most humble people I've had the pleasure to work with. Both of you always seemed so calm and collected throughout the planning process. I was so honored to help you navigate through planning your wedding and so happy with how beautiful your big day turned out to be!
As you begin this new life together as a married couple, my prayer for you is that you write a story together that will never be forgotten, that you put complete trust in each other, and that you live out your faith boldly and completely. Oh, I also hope that the Bulldogs have a terrific season and that Blake finishes all 7 Harry Potter books, along with all of the stories and accompanying materials J.K. Rowling wrote for the wizarding world.
It takes a village to pull off a wedding. While many of Emily & Blake's vendors are listed in the post above, below are others who were integral in making it all come together.
